About

John Morrissey has more than 20 years of experience covering or participating in issues related to the use of information to deliver healthcare better, cheaper and faster.

As an editor and reporter for Modern Healthcare magazine from 1987 to 2005, John produced more than 1,000 bylined articles and gained an expertise in areas of quality improvement, performance measurement, and the impact of IT strategy on healthcare delivery and efficiency.

During a formative time for health IT’s evolution from tactical aid to strategic imperative, John built a body of work around significant trends and emerging opportunities for healthcare leaders. Recognizing this expertise, the federal Office of National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) offered a two-month fellowship at the end of 2004.

After serving that fellowship, John expanded his writing into white papers and statements of position as the staff writer for the National Alliance for Health Information Technology from 2005 to 2008. Among other works, he was lead writer on a NAHIT contract with the ONC to define key health IT terms for electronic records and health information exchange and explain the reasoning behind those definitions. The report on that effort was published in May 2008. He also captured as a series of white papers the progression of ideas and plans among leaders in Louisiana for the redesign of the overall healthcare system following Hurricane Katrina. NAHIT furnished educational resources and organizational support to that collaborative effort.

As communication manager for the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT) from 2008 into 2010, he composed focused summaries of CCHIT’s mission, programs and impact on the healthcare industry for the press, Capitol Hill, the IT community and others interested in issues of certification. He also wrote reports explaining technical concepts in general language, including a primer on the commission’s timeline for electronic record interoperability circa 2009.

Since May 2010 he has written articles on a freelance basis for a number of publications in the healthcare field, including Government Health IT, Modern Healthcare, Hospitals & Health Networks and Trustee.
